Geo-information in transport network management – part I

Summary/Abstract: This article presents the functions of transport networks. These mainly include service, transfer, integration and acceleration functions. Management of networks fulfilling so many functions requires an appropriate information base. The article examines which information and database systems are used to support decision-making while managing national and provincial roads. Each of the managers gathers similar data, although their scopes differ. GIS technology makes it possible to visualize selected data and phenomena. The possibility of obtaining information on the spatial location of road network attributes allows gathering of thematic geo-information systems, which help in making decisions related to transport network maintenance and management.
