Summary/Abstract: The history of the electric public transport dates back to the eighties of nineteenth century. Its origins are linked with the tramway transport, which at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries has become part of the landscape of many cities. The beginning of the twentieth century brought the popularization of trolleybus transport. Today, new mode of public transport has become the electric bus. The paper presents two modes of the electrified public transport: trolleybus and bus electric (interchangeably called electrobus). Authors outlined the evolution of both types of urban transport focusing on auxiliary drives in the contemporary trolleybuses, which allow to go without power from the catenary in the part of the route. The most frequently used in Europe is an auxiliary combustion engine, but the development of battery technology led to the popularization of this solution. For this reason, the batteries are evaluated as a solution for the future. The study analyzed the possibility of the development of two trolleybus transport systems (in Gdynia and Lublin) based on innovative battery technology. Some cities have decided to put electric buses into public transport in a wider range, for example in Krakow and Warsaw. Ye study compared the chances to put electric buses into operation in the cities with the trolleybus transport system.
