Summary/Abstract: Education in the present society has become an interdisciplinary field of study. Post-revolutionary Romania reformed all the structures of the society in an interminable process of transition from communism to democracy, the political changes attracting after themselves legal, economic, social, educational changes etc. In almost 30 years of public and private higher education, we are witnessing a Gaussian distribution of the participants in the tertiary education, conditioned by a series of phenomena: demographic decrease, the accentuation of foreign migration, severe material deprivation that causes social exclusion and early school drop out, the quality decrease of the high-school education, reflected in small passing rates for the high-school graduation exam, lack of correlation between the study programmes and the dynamic requirements of the labour market etc. What are the long-term perspectives? This article aims at problematizing these aspects and analysing them through the magnifying lens of the governmental strategies and policies in Romania, with the purpose of forecasting the necessary directions for the time horizon 2020-2027, for which new targets need to be drawn up.
