Summary/Abstract: Descriptions of life, customs, beliefs, children’s games, mentions of folk songs and collections of proverbs were singled out from two works of Sava Tekelija, Dnevnik (Diary) and Građa za opisanije života moga (Material for Describing My Life). The aim of the paper is to establish a folklore collection which precedes the collection of Vuk Karadžić and testifies of the oral tradition in the border areas where Serbs lived (Arad) and those where Serbs migrated to (Nova Serbia, the Caucasus Line). While writing his autobiographical texts, Sava Tekelija did not have the intention to create a collection of folklore, but forms of oral tradition and various customs were an integral part of his text: when he remembered his childhood in Arad, when during his travels he observed different customs or listened to folk songs, when he commented on political circumstances in the Austrian Monarchy.
