Summary/Abstract: Zbigniew Majchrowski looks at the female characters in stagings ofAdam Mickiewicz’s Forefathers’ Eve. The author spotlights the socioeconomiccondition of women in the nineteenth century, which is oftenoverlooked in the interpretive and theatrical tradition of this work.Majchrowski analyses differences in staged presentations not onlyof iconic female characters such as Zosia or Mrs. Rollison, but also ofmarginalised, secondary characters such as Ewa, whose monologuewas frequently removed from staged performances. The article sets theefforts of contemporary directors in opposition to past productions, thusshowing the possibilities of interpreting the drama in a paradigm otherthan the patriarchal-romantic one.
