Summary/Abstract: After a long break, psychology nowadays seems to be returning to engaging issues. Most certainly, the problem of an agent falls within this category. Two fundamental attributes are usually linked to the agent: the will and self-knowledge. The article confronts this understanding, grounded in experience and philosophical tradition, with research results and theories of human functioning created on their basis. The issues referred to are of a meta-theoretical nature and are partly located at the intersection of psychology, neuroscience, and philosophy. The text consists of four parts. First part discusses the general agent-related issues on the folk and scientific grounds. In part two, the agent appears in the context of problems of awareness. Part three focuses on research in social psychology (particularly social cognition). Last part provides a venue for outlining the arising questions and doubts.
