Summary/Abstract: The concept of time manifests itself in architecture on many levels. They can refer to Time being incorporated in the building itself (conceived as permanent or temporary),to the influences of the Site upon the project or tothe architectural work as „experienced in motion”, thusshaped into an architectural route. The present article speaks of the second aforementionedaspect of the relation between Architecture and Time. The history of the place where the building will bestanding is relevant for most of the decisions throughoutthe design process. Any given site is a constant overlappingof layers of history, upon which the architectin charge is to intervene in a responsible manner. Wespeak of references that we choose to integrate or notinto the work, following a selection process. This is an abstract endeavor through which architecture gets toincorporate the essential features of the site it stemmedfrom, given that the outcome is a fortunate one, when the built object in the end really seems to belong to the„place” and be part of it.This study aims to initiate a debate about context, inour search to better understand what it means to be „contextual” in contemporary architecture. The topic is closely linked to the notion of layers that any given siteaccumulates in time and to the manner in which wechoose to select and structure them, the way we adda new layer, bearing history in mind at all times. At thesame time, this is a debate about modesty versus ego, asassumed by contemporary architects, be they renownedor just at the beginning, working under the pressure ofcontext and turning constraints into opportunities.
