Summary/Abstract: The work analyses the issue of deconstruction of gender schemes in the film series Shrek. Starting with the assumption about the social role of art, connected especially with the educational and critical function, the author considers negation of the models of the masculine and the femi- nine as an emancipation strategy, aimed at uncovering for the male and female viewers the fact that the binary divisions do not match the com- plex social reality. To this end, the notion of a post-modern fairy tale has been used as a sort of reaction to the crisis of the traditional cat- egories, connected, among others, to the subject of gender. The author presents the way in which Shrek questions the convention of the fairy tale, describes the mechanisms of destroying the fairy tale order through such artistic strategies, as, among others, “autothematism”, subversion, irony. It has been shown that the film is a parody of the traditionally understood social roles, based on the genders, and deconstructs gender models. Thus, on the micro-agency level, Shrek can be a subversive work, aimed at changing the perception of social reality by the viewers as well as breaking the stereotypes rooted in culture.
