Summary/Abstract: In this paper, we compared Desanka Maksimovic’s lyricism, based on the self-determination and the observation of the world of nature from the early and late stage, pointing to the poetic evolution. Trying to establish its modernism, corresponding with the non-symbologistic and neo-avant-gardistic poetry of the second half of 20th century. The research also implies study of chromatic symbolization, and luminance of, intense colors of the early poetry and inverting the chromatic symbolism, the dominance of darkness and in late stage, which points to a fundamental change in the world’s experience. In Maksimovic’s early works a union with the nature goes to the complete merging and transformation of the poetic subject into the vegetable world. Understanding the micro world elements enables the recognition of the universal pulse of nature, which spreads in concentric circles to the celestial sphere, and the idea of the absolute. The image of the world in Desanka Maksimovic’s poetry, by which the spark of the divine is propagated in each being (the idea of light subjects) is largely related to the motives of the neo-symbolicism and neo-avant-garde. Thus, Desanka Maksimović is fully classified into the modernist stream of Serbian poetry. Also, we have pointed out that since the 50’s, and especially since the 1970s, the poet has become one of the most inventive and most consistent creators of the poetry of death. The extensive corpus of songs about death represents an authentic and innovative lyrical testimony of mediation with the disappearance. According to its dramaticity and its wide simbolism, the intimate confessional testimony of the death Desanka Maksimovic is unique in modern Serbian poetry.
