An attempt to use the gravity model in the analysis of commuters

Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt to use the gravity model to describe how some territorial units gravitate towards cities,which play a very important role in the analysis of local and regional labor markets. Until recently the applicability of gravity models in Poland had been rather difficult owing to the limited access to data about commuters and technical limitations connected with efficient spatial information processing. Only in 2008, thanks to work conducted by the Centre for Urban Statistics of the Statistical Office in Poznan, did it become possible to fill the information gap existing in the Polish statistics since 1988 with respect to data about commutes.
