Summary/Abstract: The paper proposes to analyse the causes for which in November 1918, the National Jewish Council in Bukovina declined the invitation to attend the General Congress summoned to approve the unification of the province, until that point submitted to the Habsburg authority in Romania. The uncertainties entailed by the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy among the Jewish population in Bukovina, which had been benefiting from citizen rights – they were indeed worried about their future status in the Romanian Kingdom and about their adjustment to their new minority status acknowledged after 1918 – represented a major challenge for the Jewish elites and their political and identity options after the First World War.
