The Importance of the Barmen Declaration in the Contemporary Context

Summary/Abstract: In this article we brought to the readers` attention a document that was written about eighty years ago, namely, the Barmen Declaration. The authors of this document, mainly theologians, have categorically condemned the pressure exerted by the political leadership of the German Third Reich on the church, including the pressure from the German church compromised by political ties with the totalitarian government. The Barmen Declaration is a clear proof that there have always been courageous people who have not tolerated evil ] n society and who have been leaders of opinion with a strong voice in society. The Barmen Declaration can serve us today as a model of opposition against any kind of attempt to restrict the liberty or the freedom of speech.
