Summary/Abstract: The army that Samuel led was without any doubt a serious military force. Four decades of constant warfare with the Byzantine Empire is a sufficient evidence of that. Despite the lack of more detailed information in the sources, however, it can be assumed that its internal structure, armaments and military equipment did not deviate from the other armies that existed in this period in the region of Southeast Europe, including the art of warfare, i.e. the strategy and tactics that its supreme commander used on the battlefield. The reason why Samuel’s army failed in accomplishing the task it had, to secure the state and its borders, was the military power of the Byzantine Empire, which at that moment was in its apogee, as well as lack of sufficient amount of resources, not only human but also financial, which were essential in order to successfully respond to the Byzantine strategy of waging a long-lasting war of attrition.
