Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the right to interpretation and translation in criminal proceedings as a new measure of the EU, introduced in order to strengthening procedural rights of suspected or accused persons. It is divided into three parts. First part presents the current legal framework of the right to interpretation and translation in criminal proceedings and focuses on the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights. Second part analyses the activities of the EU and the need of strengthening the right to interpretation and translation in criminal proceedings. Third part analyses a new legislative measure of the EU – a Directive 2010/64/EU on the right to interpretation and translation in criminal proceedings.
