Summary/Abstract: The present study is an attempt to discuss the role of innovation in the business strategy of small and medium-sized enterprises. The author’s thoughts and analysis of this problem is based on the data contained in the references, a tabular Central Statistical Office and surveys conducted at the end of November 2014. The first part is the concept of innovation, with its multitude of non-standard definition. Then the author discusses what the features are that characterize innovative enterprise, as well as the definition is defined business strategy and its basic components. After a theoretical introduction the author goes on to consider the role of innovation in the business strategy of small and medium sized businesses. After discussing their percentage in the innovative activities of the Polish economy in 2011–2013, the analysis of surveys conducted among 41 small and medium sized businesses is presented. In conclusion, based on the results of the survey, the conclusions are formed about the role of innovation in running a small or medium-sized business economy.
