Summary/Abstract: The mayor institution is one of the key elements of local public administration in Romania. In this article we intend to show the important role that the mayor has in our local governance and also to make a comparative study with his role in other countries, particularly those from the European Union. His attributions and functions vary depending on the specifi cs of the administrativeterritorial organization and legislative context in which he operates. We showed that in some countries the mayor’s role is more like a ceremonious one, while in others its mission involves the achievement and coordination of complex activities
