Summary/Abstract: Meeting growing needs and expectations of the public regarding the scope, quality and methods of delivery of health services is a fundamental objective that must be achieved by a healthcare system in Poland. Apart from general problems, such as survival of healthcare organizations on the more competitive market, an aging population with chronic diseases, increasing requirements of patients and technological progress are conditions under which health systems function. As aging also applies to the medical professions and it results in shortages of staff, especially nurses. In these circumstances a strong resource restructuring of the sector is needed including amending roles of various professions, including an increase in the role of nurses, physiotherapists and public health professionals is crucial. Changing methods of payment for medical services, introduction of new non-clinical technologies and improving effectiveness of healthcare organizations and a system itself are other challenges that a healthcare system has to face.
