Summary/Abstract: In the conditions of global competition, countries whose development is based on knowledge and innovations are successful. The state of advancement of the knowledge-based economy and the level of innovation of individual economies is determined by research and development (R & D). In this situation, there is a need to analyze the functioningof the R & D sector. The main objective of the study is an attempt to evaluate selected aspects of the functioning of research and development (R & D) activities in Poland in the years 2010–2016. The analysis covered the level and structure of expenditures on research and development (R &D), R & D personnel and human resources for science and technology. The study used basic indicators of research and development activities published by the Central Statistical Office and Eurostat, including input and R & D personnel indicators as well as human resources indicators for science and technology. However, the main source of information is The Research and Development Activity in Poland in 2016 published for thefirst time in 2017.
