Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the evolution of defining the project’s success from the classic criteria: time-budget- scope (quality) to extended criteria such as: impact on theclient, business success of the organization, preparation for the future, gaining experience know-how, identifying new markets, technologies etc. The differences between the success of the project, organization, portfolios of projects or programs and even projects implemented by interorganizational networks were indicated. The selection ofcriteria, measures, measurement methods and assumptions for project success estimates has a significant impact on the final evaluation of projects. The role of stakeholders and the importance of dynamic factors in defining the success of the project were also pointed out. The concept of the spectacular success in a project has been proposed, where success means the implementation of the project in a time shorter than planned, below the assumed costs, in unexpected quality and (or) over planned scope. Spectacular successes should be a research area for further development of the project management subdiscipline. The opportunity to achieve spectacular successes in projects was proven based on theory (CCPM) and business practice.
