Summary/Abstract: One of the main objectives of the European Commission is building the Industry 4.0 as part of the “Digital Europe” project. This project assumes the creation of the most innovative, productive and technologically advanced economy in the world. The digitization of the European economy – if successful – will revolutionize almost every sector of the economy and will bring new opportunities and challenges. Each industrial revolution requires changes in at least three areas of the economy: energy, transport, communication. The energy sector is therefore again at the centre of change, as in the case of previous revolutions. Due to their character, the changes in this section of the economy are long-term and require significant financial out lays. As a result, energy companies should already double their efforts towards building the Industry 4.0. The Polish energy sector faces a number of challenges such as: redefining the energy mix taking into account the share of renewable energy sources, creating effective energy stores, implementing virtual power plants and smart grid networks. The paper presents the current status of the national energy sector and prospects for its development in the context of the Industry 4.0.
