Summary/Abstract: The article presents in a practical way the application of the SMED (Single MinuteExchange of Die) method, which is used when changing machines, to reduce downtime. Its main goal is to optimize the route of the machine operator, then reduce the external time (machine in motion) and internal time (machine at a standstill), make the job easier by eliminating waste and identifying the process with the 5S program. The technique also allows for increasing the flexibility of response to the changing demand of customers by shortening thetime of retooling and quick response to changing orders while improving material flows inthe company. Presenting the method step by step gives us the opportunity to apply it in every production company in a pragmatic way.
