Factors Affecting the SMEs’ Cooperation with Universities and Research Units

Summary/Abstract: The cooperation between enterprises and universities/research units is today an important issue with an increasingly decisive influence on economy and innovativeness. In such an environment small and medium enterprises are forced to become more innovative and are seeking for technology suppliers. It is the cooperation with research units that gives them one of the most proper solutions, though, it is often their only chance to carry on any research project at all. The subject of science – business cooperation is presented in foreign and Polish literature, where it is most often combined with the knowledge transfer topic. Though, there is stilla research gap on the subject of main factors determining the cooperation process. This article presents the results of research done on a group of micro-, small and medium-sized companies that were cooperating with universities and research units in Poland. The study included such factors, as: (1) stimulators for cooperation and (2) difficulties in cooperation. It also indicates the direction of (3) required improvements to be done.
