Summary/Abstract: Introduction. The aging process of the human body causes a gradual reduction ofphysical fitness and an increase in the incidence of chronic diseases. Maintaining proper nutrition is one of the factors that reduce these processes. Objective. The aim of this paper is to discuss basic nutrition principles (based on literature) asan important element of managing nutrition in seniors. Description. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), lifestyle is the most important factor for human health, including proper nutrition and physical activity. The elderly often donot associate inappropriate dietary behaviours with sources of diseases. Common mistakes innutrition of the elderly include: excessive consumption of animal fats and carbohydrates, aswell as low consumption of products containing vitamins and minerals. The diet of the elderly often does not correspond to rational nutrition principles and may intensify diet-related diseases. Proper healthy nutrition may protect from disease. Incorrect eating habits affect people's physical and mental capacity over time, and promote greater susceptibility to chronic diseases. Conclusions. There is an urgent need to educate the elderly about a healthy, balanced diet,which prevents or supports the treatment of existing diet-related problems.
