Summary/Abstract: Divided into two main parts, the article focuses on the study of Bulgarian language in China – its beginning, development and present situation. The first part reviews the history of Bulgarian studies in China at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) – from the beginning to the present day. The current structure of the university, the Faculty of European Languages in particular, part of which is also the Department of Bulgarian Studies, is described in detail. The second part is based on the pedagogical and teaching experience of the author with Chinese students studying Bulgarian. The presented opinion questions (and sometimes polemizes) some previous ideas about the specificities of Chinese students and their learning abilities.
