The Reduction of Authenticity in Ferrara’s Refl ective Authenticity

Summary/Abstract: In this paper I investigate the “new” concepts about authenticity and foundations of validity that Ferrara unfolds in his work “Refl ective Authenticity: rethinking the project of modernity”. The critical focus of my investigation is aimed at Ferrara’s hidden confusions and identifi cations of the notions of authenticity and authentic identity. These confusions and identifi cations, as hidden presuppositions of one recent tradition in social and political philosophy, place the notion of authenticity “under the rubric of “the ethical” and tend to ignore or misinterpret the crucial for understanding of authenticity existentialist sense gained in the continental tradition of phenomenology and hermeneutics.
