Summary/Abstract: The author points out that twenty years ago, i.e. in 1993, the Commission for Language Culture of the Committee for Linguistics of the PAS organized in Krakow a conference under the same title as the current debate “Culture of language today”. Until the end of the eighteenth century (according to the author) fostering a culture of language consisted primarily of the promotion of the best written and spoken practices, and now it focuses on the stigmatization of linguistic errors. The volume of papers, published after the conference of 1993, shows that the phenomena and problems of the Polish language culture, and their hierarchy of importance at that time, are still valid. And these are: anglicization and re-anglicization of vocabulary, obscurity of the official Polish language, general vulgarization and aggressivization of the Polish language used in public life. To counter these developments and trends, and in particular the ongoing brutalization and aggressivization of contacts between people, it seems both the family and school should accept their share in the formation of linguistic behaviour of the youngest generation. Because it is in the family and school that children learn from adults and peers how to be aggressive. The author proposes to launch a major promotion of desired patterns of interaction within the family as relevant social ads in the mass media.
