Summary/Abstract: The basic goal of the EU’s cohesion policy is to accelerate progress in terms of convergence between European countries and reduction in economic and social diversity between the EU countries and their regions. The regional inequalities in the EU result from economic activity focused mainly in the capital regions. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate the stimulating effect of the special economic zones (SEZs) on the economic growth in the region driven by the benefits of their operation. The study hypothesized that the Katowice SEZ is an effective instrument to mobilize the region’s economic development. This hypothesis was verified based on the analysis of secondary sources. The paper describes the problems concerning the establishment of SEZs and presents their characterization. Based on the analysis of examinations, reports and professional literature, the paper lists benefits of the SEZs in Poland, whereas the source of knowledge about real and planned effects of the Częstochowa Subzone of the Katowice SEZ were provided by the results of examinations conducted in the enterprises operating in the zone. It was demonstrated that the Katowice Special Economic Zone represents the factor to stimulate regional economy.
