Summary/Abstract: This article opens with a question about the consequences of appointing the date of November 11 for the celebration of Independence Day. This question is linked to the proposed methodof conducting historical research that is focused on analyzing the images of the past as a cultural construct, which primarily impacts the current cultural order; the official presentation of the past obscures the present conflicts, weakens the transference of self-knowledge, and hinders the formation of a society invested in solidarity. According to the proposed method, the author considers alternative dates that might symbolize the birth of the Second Polish Republic. While identifying the obscure origin of the independent Poland, he points to the fundamental conflicts of the former system (whether related to the class and the subordinate position of workers and peasants, the gender and the discrimination of women, or the territory and the complexities of the Borderlands).
