Summary/Abstract: Totalitarian democracy is not an oxymoron, but an old concept of political theory. It is used to cover some of the political hypostases, in which, although there are mechanisms of democratic legitimation of power, individual liberties are lost. Democracy, in order to be saved from a possible association with totalitarian regimes, must keep the liberal dimension, which is the sphere of individual rights and liberties, the theory and practice of rule of law and of constitutionalism. Thus, instead of liberal democracy, it may easily take shape totalitarian democracy.
