Summary/Abstract: Handicrafts within the scope of cultural heritage are the element of rich Anatolian culture integrated with historical, cultural, rural, urban and social values. Handicrafts required to refresh itself and ensure its sustainability in order to meet the evolving difficulties and needs of the changing world so they will not be behind the times. In this sense, artists, artisans, non-governmental organizations that may be related to the art, local governments and the Ministry of Culture have specific responsibilities. Each institution or organization has to be aware of the requirements related to its own field and responsibility, and to introduce handcrafts by using the opportunity of the age, taking the reference from the past without disturbing the traditional feature. In this context, an international organization UNESCO that Turkey is a member, gathered handicrafts within the scope of certain intangible cultural heritage headings (weaving, evil eye bead, filigree, copper, folk, architecture, etc.). UNESCO refers to the importance of transferring culture to future generations in order to economic development and poverty reduction in local development and to make use of culture on important issues such as knowing the value of its, developing innovative and sustainable cooperation models and ensure social cohesion by focusing on culture. In this study, the importance of handcrafts within the scope of intangible cultural heritage is emphasized on the basis of UNESCO’s sustainable development approach which focuses on culture. In this context it is necessary resources were searched for the sustainability of handicrafts and place and important of handicrafts in sustainable development were mentioned.
