Summary/Abstract: The European Commission has initiated the first steps towards a common framework for setting minimum wages in EU Member States, but will not determine the levelof wages, but nevertheless wants to impose an agreement on a set of criteria that must bemet when governments set minimum wages. Any legislative proposal will take into accountthat the minimum wages must be established according to the national specifications, bycollective labour contracts or legal provisions.
