Summary/Abstract: Experiences of last couple of years indicate that more and more objects achieve their political objectives without official declaration of war. Armed force is used in not a traditional way and the so-called substitute troops begin to become increasingly bigger part. The article aims to characterize the conflicts below the level of open war of alternative nature conducted between the border of war and peace. The content of the article presents the theory of unconventional warfare and its description. It brings us closer to the conception of gray zone conflicts. It explains the concept of gray zone and shows the challenges linked to rivalry for the influence zone and security provision.
