Summary/Abstract: The author reconstructs three social-cultural formulae of study practice that have been shaped during the long existence of the university. These are: (1) studying as an act of truth-seeking, (2) studying as the acquiring of professional competencies, and (3) studying as a form of consumption. Treating these types as ideal in the Weberian sense, they were used as an instrument of surveying and analysis of the results of empirical research on the attitudes towards studying, which modern students undertake. In the final part of the text, the author poses a question on the future of academic education in the context of the contemporary digital society. It cannot be ruled out that the expansion of the digital realm may lead to the replacement of knowledge by information, which from the epistemological point of view is a kind of subknowledge. There are, therefore, grounds to believe that the new, fourth tradition of studying will soon become reality.
