Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to present a new approach to the chronology of the Late Roman fortifications in Palmyra. Aspects like construction methods, use of material from older structures, technical issues connected with incorporating tombs into the defense system of the city are compared with the historical and political situation of Late Roman Palmyra in an effort to understand the meaning and purpose of the wall. A new and more accurate chronology of the Palmyra defenses was established based on a new approach to ancient written sources coupled with archeological data derived from an examination of many elements of the Late Roman fortifications.
