Summary/Abstract: The paper presents an attempt to make clear the meaning of the concept of the beauty of mathematics. To this purpose several elements of mathematics have been distinguished (formulae, mathematical concepts and objects, proofs, and the development of mathematics) and the aesthetic specificity of each of them has been discussed. Some attention is given also to the role mathematics plays in the description of art as the domain of culture in which the importance of beauty is most evident. The need to develop the aesthetics of mathematics as part of both philosophy of mathematics and aesthetics most broadly conceived has been indicated.
