Summary/Abstract: This article looks at the literary text as a valuable source of figurative language and analyses basic tropes such as metaphor and metonymy and specific tropes like hyperbole, understatement, irony and oxymoron from a cognitive linguistic perspective, by discussing their functions and the cognitive operations underlying them. The remarkable laboratory where figurative meanings are created is explored with the aim to understand how witty, brilliant prose can emerge through the use of figurative structures.
