Summary/Abstract: The present article tries to emphasize the role of the symbols when decoding the meaning of a novel. The fact that both the author and the reader are both constrained and free, compelled to apply a system of rules but free in the space of their operation, suggests comparing the reading with a game. The key to reading the literary work lies in the meaning given by the author in textual constructs and in the sense intended by the reader on the basis of certain rules of significance. The game turns into reading: on the one hand, reading as a way of observation; on the other hand, reading as inventive activity, producing sense. The relationship between hazard and necessity is the metaphor of the „carpet drawing” that traces the line between life and destiny. A lived life resembles the back of the carpet; death reveals his face painting. Death turns every life into a destiny.
