Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the analysis of the way the German grammar is presented in two textbooks belonging to two different time periods and two different methodologies. On the one hand, there is a textbook composed folowing the tradition of grammar-translation method, dominating elementary schools of the 19th-century Bosnia and Herzegovina, while, on the other hand, there is a textbook, currently in use throughout elementary schools in the Republic of Srpska, favouring communicative skills. The material is analyzed from several perspectives, such as selection, range, order and the way it is processed in order to get a clear insight into the role of grammar in the German language teaching at the end of the 19th and the begining of the 20th centuries respectively.
