Summary/Abstract: The Peloponnesian War brought to the Greek world a new enemy, the pirates, with a different type of warfare, with different actions from classical warfare. The pirates had been used by the Greek generals as auxiliary units for their army in all conflicts between the Greek states in the fifth and fourth centuries B.C. Alexander the Great was the one who freed the sea from the pirates’ control and secured the sea for merchant ships.
