Summary/Abstract: Functional illiteracy among children has been a major problem over time for all countries. Therefore, the world great educators have tried to improve the educational actions. These include Peter Petersen who developed the Jena Plan in 1927. The article presents a brief description of: the causes and evolution of the Jena Plan in Romania, the characterization of the groups, the educational space. Because an important role in the formation of the students, besides the skills of reading, writing and calculating (pursued by the phenomenon of functional illiteracy by carrying out practical activities) has also the educational environment that could stimulate the children’s curiosity, the interest of investigation and understanding of the surrounding world, experimenting through concrete actions in daily life, thus forming critical thinking for students.
