Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the role of early separation in the development of stuttering with the help of a case story of a 13-year-old boy, who stutters. He got separated from his mother, when he was three years old. His stuttering is seen as a reaction to his separation. During the exploration of his case deeper emotional problems surfaced. The diagnostic process is presented in order to outline the competence of speech and language pathologist in the treatment of people who stutter
