Summary/Abstract: In Zbigniew Herbert’s poetry, references to art play an important role in poetic imaging. Most references are related to painting and architecture, a bit less to sculpture. In the first period of his work, the poet most often invokes Greek statues, along with the beginning of his foreign travels, less- -known objects, which are a trace of personal contact with a work of art. Herbert uses the material properties of sculpture (stonework, stiffness, durability) to show allegorically the cruelty of the 20th century history and the fate of many nameless heroes immersed in it.
