Summary/Abstract: Central and Eastern Europe, broadly understood as the region between Germany and Russia,2 is in fact a simplified description of the region which has not historically constituted an autonomous political and economic entity. It is an acronym—EOEW in Polish, CEE in English etc. The lack of the positive political identity contrasts with the image of the region, admittedly extremely differentiated, but at the same time a separable subsystem of the European cultural identity (and the European economy) until the outbreak of WWII.
