Summary/Abstract: The writer Joseph Lauff, whose books in some cases reached a circulation of over 50,000 - some are still on sale today, many can be found in second-hand bookshops - has been described by mockers as "Germany's most untalented classic", but he really didn't deserve it. Benevolent critics put him on an equal footing with Wilhelm Raabe and Fritz Reuter, and these contradictions in the reception alone call on today's bibliophiles to recommend this once bright star in the German poet heaven.
