Summary/Abstract: The article reviews the state of the priests, parishes and churches from Mărginimea Sibiului in the period between the 1848 Revolution and the Great Union of 1918. The data and information selected from the Archive of the Săliște Deanery and from the periodical press of the 19th century reflect the human, social, cultural scope of the mainly Orthodox inhabitants of this area. From archpriests’ general reports, correspondence between priests and archpriests, wealth inventaries of the parishes and of the deanery, protocols of the archpriest synods, reports of the priests about the size and situation of their parishes ‒ from all these sources we can recover the comprehensive picture of the ecclesiastical heritage. Our analysis confirms that in the 13 communes belonging to the Orthodox Deanery of Săliște there existed rich church and school funds, as well as parish funds (that were necessary for the pays of the priests). The churches were kept in good condition and had precious liturgical books, vestments and vessels. The average salary of a priest counted 280 florins per year.
