Summary/Abstract: The paper addresses basic aspects of Old Bulgarian (OB) phrase structure and syntactic patterns found in one of the earliest OB manuscripts, Codex Suprasliensis. It aims at setting up a typology of the ordering of heads and their complements and modifiers, commonly known as the headedness parameter. We trace the setting of this parameter across the basic phrase types, and also make some general observations at the level of the clause, commenting on potential asymmetries between lexical and functional categories. We offer a tentative analysis of Old Bulgarian clause structure taking into account the emergence of Wackernagel clausal clitics and the complementizer category.
