In the face of change – reading in a new cultural context

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to present modern readershiphabits and the impact of new technologies developmenton them. Those technologies and social changes can alsopose a danger or provide support for the development ofreadership; however, the point is how to skilfully makeuse of them.Readership plays a significant role in modern societies. Itis considered not only a socio-cultural tool giving peopleequal chances in life and facilitating dialogue between differentcultures, but also an important economic developmentfactor. Nevertheless, the level of readership keepssuccessively decreasing in developed countries. Poland isnot an exception – on the contrary, the level of readershipis decreasing faster than in other developed countries.This article is an outline of opportunities and barriers aswell of new technologies affecting readership. The relationsbetween those opportunities or barriers and the levelof readership are also discussed. The article includesa range of examples of positive solutions from abroad, suitablefor introduction in Poland.
