Summary/Abstract: The secularization of the assets belonging to the consecrated monasteries from the Romanian Principalities was the materialization of the political will of the Romanian rulers after 1821. They supported the Romanian bishops and metropolitans in their struggle (started even from the end of the XVIIth century) to restrict the abuses of the Greek abbots. The secularization took place during the rule of Al. I. Cuza, through the law issued on December 15th, 1863. In Covurlui County, the law regarding the secularization of the assets belonging to the monasteries became effective starting with the first days of the year 1864.
