Linguistic interdependence between three editions of the Book of Tobit from the first half of the 16th century (lexical and syntactic phenomena)

Summary/Abstract: In spite of numerous linguistic research into ancient translations of the Bible (in its entirety or its particular parts), there is still lack of full knowledge of the interdependence between its components. One of the Biblical components, which so far has not been linguistically analysed, is Tobiasz patriarcha Starego Zakonu z łacińskiego języka na polski nowo a pilnie przełożony [translation of the Book of Tobit into Polish], by an anonymous author, for the first time edited by Maciej Ostrogórski in 1539. That translation was published again by Helena Unglerowa in 1540 and in 1545 by Marek Szarfenberg. These three editions, although very similar, are not identical. The article was expected to answer the question what kind of relation links the three editions. The analysis has revealed that editions number two and three are an editorial continuity (the editor of the third edition used the Unglerowa edition), whereas editions number one and two were published independently. Hence, it is justified to assume that there was an earlier – maybe 15th century – manuscript, which must have underwent a separate process of linguistic treatment in the printing houses of Ostrogórski and Unglerowa.
