The Slavonic Hexaemeron Corpus. The 14th Century Translation and John the Exarch

Summary/Abstract: The Homiliae IX in Hexaemeron by Basil of Caesarea have taken up an important place in Slavonic medieval literature: (1) John the Exarch used the homilies as a source text for his Shestodnev, and (2) the homilies were translated in full in the 14th century. The question of the Byzantine prototypes is raised, extending the focus of research to Gregory of Nyssa's De hominis opificio, a text closely related to the Homiliae in Hexaemeron in the Greek tradition. It is shown that the symbiosis of both commentaries on Genesis, the one by Basil and the one by his brother Gregory, is also typical of the Slavonic tradition.
